About ABOUT

"The works of Carmen Gonzalez are depictions of the artists subconscious; her soft focus offset by brilliant color, in moody, even brooding settings. This is in sharp contrast with the pedestrian notion that photograph are artifacts of reality, a record of the physical world. Gonzalez speaks in-depth about the motivation of the artist to leave their mark on the world through the objects that survive them. Considering this mindset, it is a safe bet that the legacy Gonzalez leaves through her photographs is one of emotion, intuition, sentiment, and subjective hopes rather than an objective representation of the physical. A prolific artist, one of the great challenges in preparing this interview has been to keep the selection to a manageable presentation."David Burns Smith - The Studio Chronicle

Carmen Gonzalez is a photographer from Spanish origins currently living in Holland. Mostly known for her self portraits, Carmen sees herself more as a visual artist than a photographer. Her work is too versatile to be be pigeonholed. I use my camera like a painter uses brushes and canvas to create art; the photo is just the beginning she states. Using herself as the main subject in her photography is, according to Gonzalez, the ultimate form of self-expression. I see myself become a sort of personification of something that once was an abstract in my fantasy and it gives me the perception that I have succeeded to capture my existence on various levels. In 2004, she started taking photos with a small digital compact camera and uploaded them on different photo sharing sites where she discovered that the public loved her work. Seven years later, the crappy camera has been replaced with a Canon EOS 5D mark II and though primarily self-taught, she followed photography training and is now a certified photographer. She loves to touch people with her work, to inspire them, to move them, and evoke emotion. Hence, the arts sector has her preference though she is aware of the difficulty to get a foothold in it. "There are too many damn good artists in the world. Sometimes it amazes me what I find on the worldwide web. Kids who barely walk this earth for two decades, are creating the most incredible art works with so much imagination and skills that more than occasionally my jaw dropped to the floor. Unfortunately talent alone is not enough. It is a tough business where you have to constantly network and work really hard to stay in the picture so that people wont forget about you. A good business instinct is an indispensable asset but alas; this often does not go hand in hand with having a creative mind." Luckily Carmen was able to show her work through a number of exhibitions in the Netherlands and Belgium and through collaboration with various artists from different art disciplines. She worked with painters, multimedia artists, and she did a show with a musical performer and a performance poet from South Africa. It was an explosion of artistry! She says enthusiastically, "What a great experience to be able to melt the passions together into one spectacular scene! Carmen hopes that in the future she will be given the opportunity to work again with talented artists. Meanwhile regional television discovered Carmens mystical world and made a background documentary about her. She also has had publications in several magazines, art books and newspapers including The Sunday Times in the United Kingdom.Currently Carmen takes it easy. She is still working on that coffee table book and hopes to publish it early 2012. Furthermore, she works as a freelancer and has her own company in visual arts. This year she was hired to photograph at the Danone nations cup soccer final in Madrid. Children from 40 countries worldwide participated and the proceeds of this event went to charity. For me this was the first time to document a sports event and I did not know what to expect of it. In the end I was so thankful to be part of this wonderful event where I could capture all these children from different nations playing sports, still so pure and not so screwed up as us adults. Still she thinks creating for the desire of creation is the most beautiful thing there is. There is no deadline attached to it, you do not need to negotiate with anyone and there is no money involved. There is only you and the engagement in the process of trying to visualize the images in your head. If I ultimately succeed in creating what I had in mind, I can really fall in love with my own work. I find that very unusual. The euphoria never lasts long though. There are many images in my head.

All things precious01 To One in paradise
by Edgar Allen Poe
Thou wast all that to me, love,
For which my soul did pine-
A green isle in the sea, love,
A fountain and a shrine,
All wreathed with fairy fruits and flowers,
And all the flowers were mine.
Ah, dream too bright to last!
Ah, starry Hope! that didst arise
But to be overcast!
A voice from out the Future cries,
'On! on!'- but o'er the Past
(Dim gulf!) my spirit hovering lies
Mute, motionless, aghast!
For, alas! alas! me
For me the light of Life is over!
'No more- no more- no more-'
(Such language holds the solemn sea
To the sands upon the shore)
Shall bloom the thunder-blasted tree
Or the stricken eagle soar!
And all my days are trances,
And all my nightly dreams
Are where thy grey eye glances,
And where thy footstep gleams-
In what ethereal dances,
By what eternal streams.
